Dry Skin Care

h-patientDry skin is one of the most common skin problems, affecting people of all age groups. Skin allergies, caused by the exposure to substances such as pollen, mold, latex, certain food products, soaps, cosmetic products and perfume, can lead to hives, dermatitis and eczema – and uncomfortable dry skin.

  • Hives are commonly caused by food or drug allergies, as well as viral or bacterial infections.

  • Dermatitis is caused when certain substances, such as chemicals, poisonous plants, cosmetic and latex products, come in contact with your skin.

  • Eczema is an allergic reaction that is more common in children and typically affects the face, elbows and knees. Dust, soaps, certain foods, pet dander and emotional stress can be linked to causing eczema.

Symptoms of dry skin include redness, rashes, swelling, itching and flaking of the skin. Often, it is hard for those suffering with dry skin to find relief, especially during the cold winter months.

Recommended treatment for dry skin includes:

  • Use moisturizer daily – apply at least twice a day
  • Take lukewarm baths and showers - not hot ones!
  • Gently pat your skin dry – do not rub
  • Do not use plain soap or a soap with perfume
  • Use a topical cortisone cream
  • Avoid scratching the affected area
  • Use herbal remedies, including flaxseed oil which eases symptoms of eczema and aloe vera gel which soothes irritated skin
